Perhaps the most dramatic view on all of Ibiza comes as you drive on the approach to Cala Carbo beach. Suddenly a gigantic mysterious looking rock seems to emerge out of nowhere, growing larger and ever more imposing every second. It is like nothing you have ever seen as it rises majestically - overwhelming your field of vision and filling you with wonder. As the road descends, this massive apparition disappears behind the hills, and you are left with a feeling of awe. Welcome to the magic of Es Vedrà, the iconic island that is forever entwined with the essence of what makes Ibiza so special. Located in the south-west near Cala d’Hort, it rises over 400 meters from the sea and is visible from many locations along the coast. Seeing it up close is an experience that most people cannot forget, and one that many of us are drawn back to over and over. [EsVedra-2.jpg] The feelings that emanate from this colossal rock have been the inspiration for myths and legends that persist to this day. Separating fact from fiction in these stories is not always easy. The Carthaginians, who ruled Ibiza for centuries in the ancient world, may have believed that Es Vedrà was the birthplace of their chief goddess Tanit. Another legend says that it is the site of the lost city of Atlantis – what some people (including Plato) claim was an advanced civilization from pre-history that was swallowed up by the sea. One of the more enduring myths says that Es Vedrà is the Island of the Sirens from Homer’s classic “The Odyssey”. In that ancient saga the hero Ulysses must sail his ship through a narrow straight. But the song of the Sirens that comes from the main island is so bewitching that sailors cannot resist it, and they are drawn towards it.   More recently, there are those who claim that it is sometimes impossible to get an accurate compass reading in the vicinity of Es Vedrà. Navigational instruments also do not always work properly in that area. Even more interesting are the many reports of UFO sightings, strange lights, eerie sounds and other paranormal phenomena near this enchanted island at night. Perhaps the most prevalent rumour is that Es Vedrà is the source of Ibiza’s special energy because it is the third most powerful electro-magnetic point on earth. Unfortunately, there is no scientific evidence to back up this claim. However, you can understand why the idea got started, because the way one feels in the presence of this magnificent rock is truly dynamic.[EsVedra-3.jpg] You can get the full experience by looking at Es Vedrá at sunset. Find a comfortable spot where you can relax and let yourself be as one with the island, the sea and the sky. As the colours on the horizon start to change, and the sea begins to glow, you will be entranced by the majesty of the moment. This is the captivating energy that makes Es Vedrá such a special place. Like the mythical song of the Sirens, it touches you deeply and beckons you to return.    In the busy summer months it is sometimes difficult to park near Es Vedrá, so please obey all parking signs.
