THE EPIC OP IBIZA & FORMENTERA
Dominique Sanson has lived in Ibiza for the past 35 years. His love for the island, its people, art and history motivated his most recent project. A series of 20 paintings taking us on a journey of Ibiza from the very beginning to modern times. The paintings indicate the rich history of Ibiza as well as the culture existing during those times.
Dominique hopes that his artistic history of Ibiza will stimulate others to delve further into the history and culture of this beautiful island.
From the cell up till primitive man. The earth emerging from the Primeval Ocean. Cosmic influences.
Talayotic period. Hunting, fishing and picking. Beginning of agriculture and breeding of livestock.
They bring to the island Ibicenco dogs, olive trees, grapes and others. The salt trade.
4. THE BRONZE AGE
Foundation of Ibiza city. Trade with Greeks. Ulysses tied to his mast next to Es Vedrá. Slingers hunting birds.
5. CARTHAGINIANS AND ROMANS
Battles on the sea and land, but far from the island. A peace treaty is signed. Ibiza becomes a Roman City.
6. ROMAN DOMINION I
Rational agriculture. The Santa Eulalia bridge maybe Roman in origen. More refined customs.
7. ROMANS DOMINION II
Picking of grapes, wine making and storing in amphores, salting of fish. Trade and a bit of culture.
8. THE VANDALS
They didn’t leave much behind but they destroyed a lot. They were Roman Christians.
9. THE BIZANTINES
Orthodox Christinanism. Subtle discussions on the nature of Christ and religion.
10. THE ARABES I
The conquest was rather peaceful. Improvements in agriculture. Sufí masters conserving.
11. THE ARABES II
More of the same. Improvement in irrigation. Poetry and music.
THE CATALANS AND ARAGONES
In the country nothing much changes except religion. Cultivating of wheat.
The Arabs leave the island by Puig des Lleo. Tagomago in the background. The three conquerors Pere de Portugal, Nuño Sanz and Guillerm de Montgri divide the island.
14. THE PIRATES
All types of pirates on the coast. Work in the fields. Collecting garlic and figs.
15. CHRISTIAN DOMINION
Construction of the first churches. Cultivation and working the wheat. Christopher Columbus selling his story to the Christian King.
Naval construction and fishing apparatus. Ibiza Bay. Many of the local fish represented underneath.
17. WAR OF SUCCESSION
The Carlists. The Bishop Abad y Lasierra. The plantation of fruit trees. Construction of seven churches.
THE CIVIL WAR
Dramatic events shake the island. Matanza. Traditional dancing.
19. THE ARRIVAL OF TOURISM
Peace, reforming of the houses, construction of hotels, “es Camio”, arrival of Hippies and tourists. The Salinas train and the first nude beach.
20. MODERN TIMES
Hippy markets and Full Moon Party.
An old Ibicenco couple is telling the story of their island and its ephemeral invaders. The door is open to the future. What will happen?
